A.I.S.E. Activity and Sustainability Report 2017-2018

This year's report focusses on the key benefits the industry brings to 500 million EU consumers on a daily basis through consumer education, stakeholder engagement, voluntary industry initiatives, product stewardship and responsible and constructive partnership with EU decision-makers. A.I.S.E.'s strategic priorities focus on:
1. Cleanliness & hygiene: a crucial industry for people's health and wellbeing, in and outside the home
2. Sustainable development: achieving significant savings through voluntary action across the market
3. Regulatory affairs: calling for a single market approach and the provision of adequate use information.

Highlights from the new report include strong industry performance: Overall market value of 35,9 billion EUR in 2017, incl. 28,6 billion of the household sector and 7,3 billion EUR of the professional sector

Strong sustainability performance:
- Nearly 250 companies members of the Charter for Sustainable Cleaning
- 103 manufacturing companies submitted KPI data for 2017
- 1.5 billion consumer products carried the Charter Advanced Sustainability Profile in 2017
- Since 2011, 7 billion consumer products sold with ASP logo
- 35% reduction in energy use since 2006

- 36% reduction in CO2 emissions since 2006

- 25% reduction in packaging per consumer use since 2006.

A.I.S.E. Activity and Sustainability Report 2016-2017

This year's report presents the four pillars of A.I.S.E.'s new 2025 strategic priorities, namely cleanliness and hygiene; sustainable development; product stewardship and regulatory affairs; and a member-centric organisation. Our business activities and progress during 2016 reflect our commitment to implementing these priorities in every aspect of our business. The detergent and maintenance products industry plays an essential role in ensuring cleanliness and hygiene in today's society. The products, services and equipment provided by this industry contribute to public health and personal wellbeing, as well as an innovative, thriving and competitive economy, enhancing the quality of life of 500 million EU consumers on a daily basis. You will fine numerous examples of how we bring about these benefits in the report, through stakeholder engagement, voluntary industry initiatives, product stewardship and responsible and constructive partnership with EU decision-makers to ensure an effective and coherent legislative environment.

Highlights from 2016 include: 

- Strong industry performance: a market value of €35,6 billion in 2016 (28,5b household sector: 7,1b professional sector)

- Strong sustainability performance: 1.4 billion consumer products carried the Charter Advanced Sustainability Profile in 2016; and KPI data shows a reduction of -34.9% in energy use and -30.6% in CO2 emissions over 10 years

- Strong commitment to our role as a constructive partner in EU regulatory activities

A.I.S.E. Activity and Sustainability Report 2015-2016

The new A.I.S.E. annual Activity and Sustainability Report is available now, covering the period from July 2015 to June 2016. Very strong results are reported on sustainability progress. Membership of the A.I.S.E. Charter for Sustainable Cleaning rises steadily, with more than 230 companies currently committed. In the past 10 years, the KPI reporting shows a reduction of:
-30% in energy use per tonne of production
-25% in CO2 emissions.
The number of consumer products now carrying the Advanced Sustainability Profile (ASP) logo and targeting ambitious sustainability criteria has increased by 29% to 1.29 billion units. From the laundry category alone, 41% of products comply with the Charter's ASPs.

A.I.S.E. Activity and Sustainability Report 2014-2015

The new A.I.S.E. annual Activity and Sustainability Report has just been published. It covers the period from June 2014 to June 2015. The report provides an overview of A.I.S.E.'s two key areas of activity: product safety & innovation and sustainability initiatives. This year's focal point is the Professional Cleaning and Hygiene sector, which makes a vital contribution to public health and wellbeing. Just like last year, the sustainability section reports strong results. Key performance indicators highlight the value of the A.I.S.E. Charter for Sustainable Cleaning.  The reduction in CO2 emissions continues with the total falling by 2.3% on a like-for-like basis versus 2013. Another key highlight, the number of consumer products carrying the ASP logo grew from 820m to 1 billion, an increase of 22% on a like-for-like basis versus 2013. From the laundry category alone, 33% of products comply with the Charter Advanced Sustainability Profiles (ASPs), a testament to the Charter's success.

A.I.S.E. Activity and Sustainability Report 2013-2014 available now!

A.I.S.E. released today, its joint activity and sustainability report. The report focuses on the highlights of A.I.S.E.'s two key pillars of activities over the past 12 months namely product safety and innovation on one hand, and sustainability initiatives on the other. A.I.S.E. is also delighted to announce the broadening of its membership and welcome partners from related industries in the value chain as associate members to further enhance cooperation.
The Sustainability section reports strong results, and Key Performance Indicators highlight the value of the Charter.  The reduction in CO2 emissions is impressive with the total falling by -10% on a like-for-like basis versus 2012. Another key highlight, the number of consumer products carrying the ASP logo increased from 688m to 820m, an increase of 19% on a like-for-like basis versus 2012. From the laundry category alone, 31% of products comply with the Charter Advanced Sustainability Profiles, a testament to the Charter's success.

A.I.S.E. PEF pilot on liquid laundry detergent - 1st Stakeholder consultation workshop on 24 March 2014 in Brussels

What?  First stakeholder workshop on A.I.S.E.'s PEF pilot on liquid laundry detergents
When? Monday 24th March 2014, 11:00-17:00
Where? Conference Center Albert Borschette, Rue Froissart 36, 1040 Brussels
For whom? Any  stakeholder, industry, supplier, value chain partner, member states, NGOs interested in the PEF pilot on laundry detergents in particular, and who may contribute to the preliminary work ahead of the drafting of the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR).
How? Interested stakeholders can register for this event (free of charge) via the official European Commission website as follows:

2. Complete the registration form - click here (please note that a delay of one to two days may be needed to allow your registration if you are not already signed up to the wiki page)

NB : due to the limited capacity of the room, applications will be treated on a 'first come first serve' basis. Please note that travel expenses or lunch are not covered by the organisers. Do not forget to bring ID for the meeting. Please note that you will receive a confirmation of the acceptance of your registration. Confirmations are sent once per day.  Once room capacity is filled, registrants will be put on a waiting list. For cancellations please write to env-environmental-footprint@ec.europa.eu
On what precisely? A detailed agenda as well as relevant pre-reading materials will be provided to stakeholders one month prior to the event (end February). In particular, the purpose of this first workshop will be to share an overview of the existing relevant material linked to liquid laundry detergents (life-cycle analysis and category rules), and share preliminary assumptions on the representative product among others. Further details on the meeting will be uploaded on the stakeholder workspace .
Please note that written comments can be made to the documents for four weeks starting with the moment the documents are made available on the Stakeholder Workspace. This possibility is open to any stakeholder registered on the workspace (including the ones who could not participate at the meeting). Further instructions on commenting will follow.
Background: End 2013, A.I.S.E., the International Association for Soaps, Detergent and Maintenance Products, was retained by the EU Commission as one of the retained pilots on Product Environmental Footprint (http://ec.europa.eu/environment/eussd/smgp/pef_pilots.htm)
- Developing PEF category rules (PEFCR)
- Verifying/testing those on products
- Testing those PEF category rules for B2B/B2C communication

The A.I.S.E. Technical Secretariat  currently comprises a consortium of 7 companies involved in this category (Dalli, Ecover, Henkel, Mc Bride, Procter & Gamble, Unilever, Vandeputte), 2  A.I.S.E. National Associations (Afise, DETIC),  as well as several other experts (FOEN (Swiss government), GS1, SGS, TU Berlin, The Sustainability Consortium). The A.I.S.E. TS is supported by the consultancy Solinnen. Stakeholders' involvement is a key element of the PEF pilot work. In addition to registering to the above workshop, interested stakeholders can also express their interest to A.I.S.E.'s pilot by registering themselves  via the EU COM  Wiki web platform.

A.I.S.E.'s pilot on laundry detergents selected by European Commission to lead project on Environmental Footprinting of products

The European Commission has announced its selection out of 90 applications for its 3-year pilot test on environmental performance of products (PEF). The A.I.S.E. project has been selected as one of the 14 pilots with liquid laundry detergents.

60th Anniversary Special Edition A.I.S.E. Activity and Sustainability Report 2012-2013 now available!

A.I.S.E. has released a special 60th anniversary edition of its joint activity and sustainability report providing an overview of its 2012 to mid-2013 achievements in regulatory affairs and in voluntary activities, as well as the 2012 market value. The sustainability section of the report focuses on the Charter for Sustainable Cleaning Update 2010 and reports progress on the 2012 KPI performance indicators. There is a special 60th anniversary pull out section that reflects on the key highlights of the conference held in December 2012 to mark this occasion which coincided with A.I.S.E.'s 9th annual Information Day.

A.I.S.E. welcomes its 200th member to the Charter for Sustainable Cleaning

Vipack, BV, a Dutch manufacturer of laundry detergents and cleaners becomes the 200th member to join the Charter for Sustainable Cleaning Scheme. With 200 companies now on board, covering more than 85% of the total production of soaps, detergents and maintenance products in Europe, the Charter reaffirms the success of this sectoral sustainability scheme.

A.I.S.E. Activity and Sustainability Report 2011-2012 available now!
A.I.S.E. released today, its joint activity and sustainability report, providing an overview of its 2010 to mid-2011 achievements in regulatory affairs and in voluntary activities.  Highlights of the 2011 Charter KPI reporting are:
- The total production tonnage covered by the Charter was 12.0 million tonnes, up +4% vs 2010.
- Energy consumed per tonne of production fell by -4.0%, making a total decline of -18% since 2006.
- Emissions of CO2 fell by -9% per tonne of production on a like-for-like basis, making a total decline of -22% since 2006.
- Water consumed per tonne of production fell -3.8% vs 2010.

On 30 November 2011, A.I.S.E. organised in Brussels a Charter workshop which was attended by more than 50 delegates from Charter member companies, companies preparing for the Charter Entrance Check, Charter verifiers and national associations. Representatives from five Charter member companies shared case studies on best practice. Roland Schroeder from Henkel informed the audience on the management of consumer related health information; this presentation was followed by Van Dam Bodegraven's Cyril Hornikx, who shared examples on how energy consumption and CO2 emissions can be reduced. Ad Jespers gave an inside view of Diversey's sustainability with professional customers, Forbes McDougall presented P&G's programme on how to achieve zero waste to landfill, and Frank Blumenthal from Colgate Palmolive informed the participants on safe and healthy workplaces. In addition, A.I.S.E.'s Director General, Susanne Zaenker, gave an overview on political developments on EU level, especially on the European Commission SCP/SIP Action Plan.

Charter update 2010 open for commitment: "EU Detergent industry extends voluntary sustainability assurance to individual products"

A.I.S.E. today announced a major extension to its EU-wide Charter for Sustainable Cleaning scheme with the introduction of a new on-pack seal to be used to distinguish individual detergent and maintenance products that meet higher sustainability standards within their product categories.

Charter update 2010 available and open for training!

Following earlier consultations, A.I.S.E. released today via www.sustainable-cleaning.com an upgrade of the Charter for Sustainable Cleaning, version 2010. Building on the success of the current scheme, A.I.S.E. aims at offering the most advanced sustainability scheme for the industry, in line with the EU political agenda. Building on the Charter 2005 principles, the major change proposed is the addition of a product dimension called Advanced Sustainability Procedure (ASP).
The website includes the overall principles of the project as well as the necessary information regarding the Charter 2010 training. Companies wishing to join the Charter 2010 will be able to do so from 1 October 2010.

Charter for Sustainable Cleaning, it reports progress on the 2009 KPI and the latest thinking on the update of the Charter which will see in 2010 the addition of a product dimension to the existing company scheme.

More than 80% of production output is covered by Charter for Sustainable Cleaning: 100th member signs up to Charter!

A.I.S.E. welcomed its 100th member to the Charter for Sustainable Cleaning. Musgrave Retail Partners Ireland, joined the scheme this month. With 100 companies now on board, more than 80% of the total production of soaps, detergents and maintenance products in Europe are covered by the Charter scheme.

Consultation on the proposed product dimension of the Charter for Sustainable Cleaning 2010

Between 18 December 2009 and 27 January 2010, A.I.S.E is organising a consultation on the proposed product dimension of the Charter for Sustainable Cleaning 2010 (Charter 2010) for a first wave of product categories with the companies committed in Charter 2005, other members of the industry and the Charter verifiers involved in such product categories on the proposed Charter 2010 Advanced Sustainability Profiles (ASPs) for solid and liquid laundry detergent and fabric conditioners. A.I.S.E. Launches its Second Sustainability Report: Industry affirms its commitment to sustainable development

A.I.S.E. is very pleased to announce that in 2006 there was a reduction in the rate of CO2 emissions and a reduction in the rate of water consumption. Over 46 companies are now participating in the A.I.S.E. Charter for Sustainable Cleaning, representing more than two thirds of all household and cleaning output in the European Union.

First Sustainability Report launched

Europe's detergents industry today signaled its firm commitment to global sustainable development with the publication its first annual industry-wide Sustainability Report. This first report establishes performance benchmarks in ten key areas, including CO2 emissions, packaging usage, and end-user guidance.
The A.I.S.E. Sustainability Report sets out how soap, detergent, and maintenance products manufacturers and retailers are committing to continual improvement in their sustainability profiles at all stages of the product life-cycle by joining the A.I.S.E.bs voluntary Charter for Sustainable Cleaning.

A.I.S.E. had launched today a more consumer-friendly Charter website on www.sustainable-cleaning.com offering an introduction to consumers on the Charter, its significance and usage.
